About us
Merriweather Records began in 1994 as a small record label with Kathy Reid-Naiman as the sole owner. One children's cassette was produced in the first year. "Tickles and Tunes" was very well received and quickly became a favourite. In 1997 another children's recording was produced, "More Tickles and Tunes", and both titles were manufactured as CDs. That year Arnie Naiman, Kathy's husband joined the company and the first of the Banjo recordings "Five Strings Attached with No Backing" was created. Two years later, two more recordings, "Say Hello to the Morning" for the children and "Five Strings Attached Volume 2" were made.
Merriweather Records was becoming very well established. 2001 was a turning point for the company. We became incorporated and two projects were started at the same time, a lullaby recording and a collection of songs for the Parent-Child Mother Goose program. This disc "A Smooth Road to London Town" has been widely acclaimed and was chosen to be included in the Newborn Literacy Kit that was given to every newborn baby across Ontario from 2003 to 2005. Early in 2002 a French recording "Savez-vous planter des choux?" was produced for the Parent-Child Mother Goose program for Francophone children to go in the French version of the Newborn Literacy Kit. This was the first venture for Hannah Naiman.
Kathy branched out and with Ken Whiteley co-produced a children's album by Debbie Carroll, a very talented children's teacher and musician. "Up and Over the Moon!" was released in March 2003. Debbie's second CD 'Simply Beautiful' was released in June 2007 Kathy has produced CDs for Toronto storytellers - Carol Ashton's 'A Children's Ceilidh' and 'Molly Put the Kettle On'. and Sally and Erika's 'Lullabies and LapRhymes' and 'Here Comes Mr. Bear'. They are a part of a series of CDs with the emphasis on storytelling and lapsits for young children. In 2009, Zoom Zoom Cuddle and Croon was commissioned for the BC Library Association’s ‘Books for BC Babies’ Early Literacy Kits. Kathy Reid-Naiman now has 12 award winning CDs and a DVD - 'Fingerplays!' Produced by Grammy Award Winner, Cathy Fink. Kathy has a busy conference and workshop schedule and is in demand as a Keynote speaker for Early Childhood events across North America.
